The designer has contacted us explaining that that whole thing is a misunderstanding and that he meant it only as a practice site with no intention of selling it to a real client.
I have a Great! idea. Change your header to a new file name and make the current one they are pulling from something really bad. Porn, Talking about how their company sucks, Dead Baby Animals, anything that will make them never do that again!
Yes, that is a great idea! We should consider doing that when the site goes live. But definately not putting porn and etc, because we are family friendly company :).
That’s very uncool. I hope you’ve contacted the guy/gal? I found the email address -blanked out- and emailed the person. If enough of us bug the person I bet he/she will relent.
And if not, definitely change your background image to say “I am a filthy bandwidth stealer!”.
hey. that’s my website there.. just thought i should offer up my defense. i’m learning CSS and i was just messing around practicing some stuff and thought i’d learn off someone who knew what they were doing. i only put it up so that a friend could look at it. i’ve taken it down now. sorry for the misunderstanding.
Ah yes. Sounds like an honest mistake. What do you think? Being that the site was in a staging environment, I am guessing you stumbled upon it while looking at your stats? I made a recent discovery while going through my web stats - someone didn’t steal my design, they instead thought it better to just steal credit for building my web site!
Anyway, good to see you forced the culprit ‘out of hiding’. What if your official response to the excuse?
@CC:
We applaud your honesty and coming forward to explain yourself. As we have said before, our main intention is not so much humiliating copycat designers than really wanting to bring home the point that no one should rip off other’s hard work that way. So now that you have come clean about what was really happening, we are more than happy to remove the content of this post (plus make some edits on the comments.) One thing though, you might want to stop linking to our header image directly. It’s always a bad idea to hotlink like that.
@Michael:
I’m quite amused by your experience with someone stealing your identity! Not that I find it cute and funny, but rather I wonder what’s with these people. You are right, people stealing designs are quite common, but someone claiming for works that they did not do, I haven’t seen that before!
Ron: I know what you mean. I was amazed at the discovery myself. I just can’t understand the mindset of some people. When I did confront him, he was horrified to learn the story had made DIGG and some other popular news sources. It was thanks to some very resourceful readers tracking him down I was able to get in contact with him. He was very appologietic (and embarressed) in the end :-)
Love your site man, especially the lemon. Was reading yours and Ron post and it is sure funny people trying to earn credit for other people work. Btw, I’m using Sony Ericsson W550i and love it. The sound quality coming out from the speaker is wonderful.
Hi CC
great that everything end up in a good way, keep on learning CSS (I’m learning them too) and I hope what happen won’t stop you from learning, just remember to ask for permission first and everything should be fine.
